Letter 6. A World beyond Money

Letter 6. A World Beyond Money- sharing is caring

Leora considers the world’s obsession with money and the inherent inequalities it creates. She imagines a world where wealth is no longer worshiped, where everyone has enough, and where human worth transcends productivity.

“Dear Tomorrow, may we find wealth in unity, in the generosity of spirit. If those who hold great wealth cannot share it, let us—the relatively rich—be willing to step back. Let us bring things down to what is necessary, so others may step up to what they need. True prosperity is shared.”
This vision is a call to everyday people to embrace simplicity and compassion as resistance to a system that values money over life.

Leora reflects on a society free from the tyranny of excessive wealth and scarcity, envisioning a world where resources are distributed with dignity and fairness. Leora explores the concept of “enough” and challenges readers to consider what they could give up, so others may thrive. With examples of communities that already practice mutual aid, she illustrates that a world without extreme wealth disparities is possible.

Leora is meeting an old friend who is struggling with retirement insecurity and feels that life has “passed them by.” This meeting triggers her letter on wealth, value, and the shared human worth that transcends material wealth.

“Dear Tomorrow,

Today, I’m writing to you about something that seems both impossible and deeply necessary: a world beyond money, where wealth is measured in kindness, community, and the well-being of each person. Imagine a world where value doesn’t come from what you produce, but from who you are and how you uplift others. I’ve watched for so long as money has become the only language of worth, the only thing people seem to worship, yet it’s also the very thing that divides us most.

But what if we chose to see wealth differently? Imagine if we, the ones with enough, made a simple promise: to step back—two steps back, even—in our lifestyles, so that others could step forward. Imagine choosing to live with just what we need, a bit less comfort, fewer luxuries, in exchange for knowing that others would have enough to survive and thrive. Not as charity, not as a handout, but as a movement towards balance and justice.

What could it look like? A world where every child goes to sleep with a full stomach. A world where communities don’t compete but care for each other, where people are free to learn, to rest, to dream without fear of going hungry. Imagine each one of us—whether rich, comfortable, or even just barely getting by—offering a bit of our own to help create this balance, giving not out of guilt, but out of a commitment to fairness, out of love for one another.

If governments and billionaires won’t make it happen, maybe it’s time we do. Maybe, with each of us stepping back just a little, giving up just a few comforts, we could make it possible for others to step into something new. It would take courage. It would take patience. It would require a new kind of strength. But I believe it could pave the way for a world that feels fair, just, and peaceful.

In a world like this, we’d no longer need to prove our worth through work or wealth. Instead, we’d value each other just for being here—for existing, for being human. There would be no more hunger, no more silent suffering behind closed doors. The world would be a community, not a competition. We would be free to live simply, richly, connected not by power, but by purpose.

So, dear Tomorrow, I am daring you to dream. Could you imagine a world beyond money—a world where each of us, even if it’s just a little, steps back so that others may step forward?
With hope,
Leora
